It was initially named "Panrethymnia", and local sports competitions were scheduled for November 8, 1930. However, due to nationwide celebrations marking the centennial of Greece's liberation from Ottoman rule that year were coincided with the Arkadi Holocaust anniversary on 8 November 1930 in Rethymno, it was decided to rename the games to "Arcadian Games". The inaugural official Arcadian Games took place in Averof Square, where athlete Andreas Piskopakis recited the oath, and the president of the Rethymno Athletic Club greeted the athletes of the first Arcadian Games. Until today, November 8th is a celebration and public holiday for the city of Rethymno, marked by various events, including a large parade featuring military units, students, and cultural associations.
